Radon in Iowa: A Public Health Perspective
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas produced from the breakdown of uranium in soil and rock. It is colorless, odorless, and tasteless, making testing the only reliable way to determine whether radon is present in a home. Iowa consistently ranks among the highest states in the nation for elevated radon levels, underscoring the importance of routine testing as a critical public health measure.
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), radon exposure is the second leading cause of lung cancer overall and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Prolonged exposure to elevated radon levels significantly increases health risks, particularly because radon tends to accumulate in enclosed indoor environments such as basements and lower living areas.
Osceola Community Health Services encourages all residents to test their homes for radon and to take appropriate action when elevated levels are identified. Testing is simple, affordable, and an effective way to reduce preventable health risks within the home.
Short-Term Radon Test Kits (3–7 days)
Short-term radon test kits are commonly used and are recommended when:
• Testing a home for radon for the first time
• Conducting a follow-up test after a previous result showed elevated levels
• Verifying radon levels after installation of a radon mitigation system
• Periodically confirming that an existing mitigation system continues to function properly
Short-term test kits provide a snapshot of radon levels and should be placed in the lowest livable area of the home, such as a basement or first floor.
Long-Term Radon Test Kits (3–12 months)
Long-term radon test kits measure radon levels over an extended period and are recommended when:
• Determining a home’s average radon exposure over time
• Confirming low or borderline results from a short-term test
Long-term testing provides a more accurate representation of year-round radon exposure and is particularly valuable in Iowa, where radon levels may vary by season.
Where to Purchase Radon Test Kits
- Radon test kits are available through Osceola Community Health for $10.00 per kit.
Radon Mitigation and Next Steps
If radon test results indicate levels at or above the EPA action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), installation of a radon mitigation system is recommended. Radon mitigation systems are designed to safely redirect radon gas from beneath a home to the outdoors and are highly effective when installed by a certified professional. Re-testing homes every two years, after major renovations, or following changes to a home’s foundation or ventilation is highly recommended. Even homes with existing mitigation systems should be periodically tested to ensure continued effectiveness.
By increasing awareness, promoting routine testing, and supporting mitigation efforts, Osceola Community Health Services remains committed to reducing radon-related health risks and protecting the long-term health of Osceola County residents.
