Summer safety made simple

Follow these tips to keep your summer fun and safe:

  • In summer heat, be aware of symptoms like headache, dizziness, nausea, and muscle cramps and seek medical attention if they occur. Do not leave children and pets in cars.
  • Stay Hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, throughout the day, even before feeling thirsty.

  • Apply sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher liberally and reapply every two hours, especially when swimming or sweating.

Free sunscreen is now available at the Sibley Outdoor Aquatic Center, thanks to the support of Osceola Community Health Services along with Iowa Cancer Consortium, the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services, and Melanoma Iowa.

  • Closely supervise children around water, even in shallow areas. Use life jackets or appropriate flotation devices when boating or swimming in open water.
  • Always keep a well-stocked first aid kit handy for minor injuries.

  • Reapply bug repellent as needed. Check for ticks after spending time outdoors and remove them promptly.

  • Always wear helmets when biking, riding a scooter or skateboarding.
